Mock-up Styling: A Recent Experiment That’s Working
Lately at Image Foundry we have been testing a simple idea. Start with what you already have, either a white block render or a hard finishes render, and use AI to sketch out furnishing directions. A white block gives us the right architecture with no materials. A hard finishes render adds floors, skirting, switches, and colours but keeps the room unfurnished. Think empty estate agent photo, but perfectly modelled.
Feeding those renders into our AI tools has been surprisingly effective. It is not flawless. Some outputs are off, some are spot on. What excites us is how quickly we can generate several credible looks, then sit with a client and talk about feel and function using concrete visuals rather than abstract references.
One thing to note. When we feed in white block or hard finishes renders, AI will sometimes return a styled image that has very small architectural changes. These are minor tweaks that do not alter the flow of the space or the composition of the shot, but they do shift details of the architecture. That would not be suitable as a final deliverable, but for quick style mock-ups it is perfectly acceptable and still very useful for decision making.
Traditionally we would begin with a mood board. That takes time on both sides and adds cost. Our recent trials show that AI mock-ups can often replace that first chunk of stylist time. We still lock a direction early, only now we do it faster and with imagery that relates directly to the space you are actually producing.
This is not the answer for every brief. If the goal is a highly original or statement design, we may still recommend a fuller pre-production phase. For many mid-market property projects where the aim is attractive, current, and broadly appealing visuals, it fits perfectly.
The result is momentum. We quickly narrow to what resonates, reduce early rounds, and move into production with confidence, using the accurate geometry and finishes you already have as the launch pad. We have been genuinely excited by how much time this saves without sacrificing quality.
